It’s so easy to tell people just to go with their gut and not care what other people think. It’s much harder to actually practice what you preach.
I still try really hard to do what I think is best for my family even if it goes against popular opinion. After all, each family and each situation is unique. What works for your best friend, what worked for your mom or what society thinks might not be the best thing for your own family. That’s okay!
I ran into this recently when I was trying to decide what color twin bed I should buy for our toddler. It is a sweet little metal bed frame with a vintage feel. The bed comes in white, dark bronze and black. I really love the white one. Everyone I’ve asked prefers the bronze one.
And I almost talked myself into getting the bronze one just because everyone else liked it more than the white. But when I really think about that, that’s so silly right!? No-one else is going to see that bed day in and day out. But I am!
It’s going to be one of the first things I see in the morning when I wake our son up and one of the last things I see at night when I tuck him in…and then again later when I check on him before I go to my own bed. And I’ll be doing that for at least the next 15 years. 😉
Doesn’t it make more sense to buy the one that I like the most? Even if it’s not the most popular choice? Yes! I think it does.
This is about so much more than just choosing a bed color though.
Everyone you meet is going to have their own opinion (that’s yet another reason why I’m not on social media anymore). And trying to please everyone else is a surefire way to drive yourself crazy. Do what’s best for your own family, go with your gut and don’t worry so much about what everyone else thinks. You’re the one that has to live your life…so be sure the decisions you make are what YOU want for you, and not what everyone else wants.
Have you had a hard time following your gut? Do you let what others like trump what you like? Let me know in the comments!
